Some of that performance gap, especially with focusing, has been narrowed by firmware updates.The Z fc (and similary would a Z50 and Z30) performs incredibly well at high ISO low light. Nikon performs better than the more expensive/newer XT5, R7, and performs similarly to the full frame Sony A7C (which has the sensor from the A7 III). Very impressive. It's also less than perfect in the corners at 24mm. I tend to bring my 85/1.8 along for situations that need more wide open sharpness and better bokeh, and my 16-35 to cover the weakness at 24mm. The 300 f/4 PF is about as sharp as its predecessor, which is plenty sharp for most people. The 300 f/4 PF + TC-14e III also handily beats the 80-400 at the 400mm end. What has changed are the focussing speeds and additional modes as well as the coverage of focussing points. But for the bodies its designed to fit like D2-3 and probebly the D700 (by the looks of it) its a good aid.
