I have not killed any NPCs but Lautrec (pretty much as soon as he was at the shrine) and the Cleric ...The Firelink kill is basically free, while he can be quite challenging to battle in his cell for a new player. The number of people I've tried to help fight the Gargoyles only to watch them aggro Lautrec without realizing I can't help as a phantom and get destroyed by him is ridiculous. But no, there's no other difference....
